Uncharted 2 follow-up update: Sony confirms development progress

Sony’s Uncharted movie adaptation, long plagued by delays and setbacks exacerbated by the pandemic, finally hit screens two years ago, marking a milestone for fans of Naughty Dog’s beloved video game series. But what about the long-awaited sequel? At the 2024 CineEurope trade show, Sony Pictures president of international distribution Steven O’Dell provided a reassuring update: Uncharted 2 remains firmly in development.

Details about the sequel are scarce, but confirmation of continued progress is sure to excite enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the next installment. The first film introduced Tom Holland as the resourceful Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his veteran mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Set against the backdrop of a high-stakes treasure hunt, the story combines elements of adventure, mystery and the pursuit of an elusive fortune lost centuries ago.

Reflecting on the sequel, Wahlberg hinted at a promising future, noting the evolution of the script and the significance of Sully’s iconic mustache, a detail cherished by fans.

“I’ve heard a lot of different ideas. I know someone wrote a script, and they’re still working on it, and it would consist of wearing the mustache all the time. Which makes perfect sense; obviously in that final scene I got the mustache. He added: “When I finally got the mustache, people really appreciated it. And it was a nice tag at the end of that movie. So if we can make it better than the first one, I’d be open to it, but I only know as much as you know right now.”

With the foundation laid in the first film, expectations are high that Uncharted 2 will build on the success of its predecessor, promising even more thrilling escapades and perhaps answers to lingering mysteries.
