Turkey vs Georgia LIVE: Euro 2024 result and reaction after Arda Guler’s miracle goal

Turkey vs Georgia LIVE: Euro 2024 result and reaction after Arda Guler’s miracle goal

‘We are ready for battle’ Georgia coach Sagnol ahead of his European Championship debut against Turkey

Euro 2024 continues with Turkey beating Georgia 3-1 in a thrilling match, which featured some of the best goals of the tournament so far.

Real Madrid teenager Arda Guler scored on his European Championship debut as Turkey secured victory. Mert Mulder had put Turkey ahead after 25 minutes, but his goal was quickly canceled out by Georges Mikautadze, who scored his country’s first ever goal in a major tournament.

Guler hit a curling strike from 25 yards to restore Turkey’s lead before they sealed the win with the final kick of the match as Kerem Arturkoglu passed the ball into an empty net.

However, the Group F match got off to a rocky start as fans clashed as heavy rain fell in the stadium. Supporters were forced to take cover but the roof of the Westfalenstadion, home of Borussia Dortmund, was breached by the massive amount of rain, leaving many fans soaked after several heavy rains hit the ground.

Vincenzo Montella’s Turkey went into the tournament in terrible form, having won none of their last five matches. But they have a talented squad with the likes of Real Madrid’s Arda Guler and Benfica’s Orkun Kokcu looking to make their mark in this tournament and guarantee a better performance than their lowest finish at Euro 2020.

In contrast, Georgia are taking part in their first ever international tournament, having defeated Greece on penalties in the qualifying play-offs. They have since completed a confidence-boosting 3-1 win over Montenegro and, led by Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, will be hoping to cause an upset tonight.

Brawls, biblical rain and miracle goals: how Turkey vs Georgia turned Euro 2024 upside down

You’d be forgiven for pegging Turkey vs. Georgia as the most understated match of the Euro 2024 group stage. After all, the teams’ combined ranking was the most modest of the tournament so far, with Georgia advancing to Group F without a European Championship experience to his name. Although, this game? It became something that went much further than a football match.

But when that violence started, when water poured through the roof of the arena and fans jumped from their seats to attack each other, questions arose. Would the game continue, and if it did, would it even resemble a football match?

To say that tension can be cut with a knife would be to give unnecessary credit to knives. You could have broken the tension with a balloon.

It felt like everything could collapse at any moment, thanks to the slightest movement or even the slightest thought. It felt like a foul on the pitch could cause a riot, such was the atmosphere of hostility, but thankfully the violence in the stands seemed to have subsided by kick-off.

How Portugal’s unexpected decision on Cristiano Ronaldo made them top contenders for Euro 2024

When Roberto Martinez first took office in Portugal in January 2023, a move that was not exactly universally celebrated, there was one source of tension that dominated everything. The Catalan was expected to make the final decision on Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future. Predecessor Fernando Santos had already started the process by leaving the Portuguese superpower out of the 2022 World Cup final in Switzerland, after which Ronaldo left for the Saudi Pro League, which should have made the decision even easier.

Instead, it made what happened next all the more surprising. There was no tension between Ronaldo and Martinez. The new manager kept him in the squad, but also integrated him further into the team. While there was a feeling that Martinez would create a major problem for himself, the opposite has instead been proven. It wasn’t a problem as Ronaldo remained a productive player.

He scored ten goals in qualifying, but that was part of an extremely talented team and not the focus of everything.

GOAL! Turkey 3-1 Georgia

GOAL! And Turkey seals it!

Georgia has two consecutive corners and Mamardashvili is left standing. The second ball is knocked away by Gunok, and Aktürkoğlu catches it while the Georgia goalkeeper is still in the penalty area. Finding himself in acres of space, he races towards Georgia’s unguarded goal before coolly passing it into an open net, causing chaos at the BVB Stadium.
