Nigerians have been warned not to leave their cooked food in the refrigerator for more than three days to avoid contamination that could be harmful and fatal.

Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, warned on Tuesday through a statement signed by the agency’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola.

Adeyeye stressed that leaving cooked food in the refrigerator for more than three days exposes the food to contamination by disease-causing pathogens, leading to foodborne illness that can lead to death.

“She (Prof. Adeyeye) urged Nigerians not to keep cooked food in the refrigerator for more than three days, warning that cooked food kept in the refrigerator for days is susceptible to contamination by disease-causing pathogens, major causes of foodborne illness that can lead to death,” the statement said.

While speaking on the World Food Safety Day 2024 on the theme ‘Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected’, NAFDAC DG also called for conscious efforts to create a food safety culture by stakeholders to reduce food hazards and risks.

Adeyeye stressed the importance of food safety not only for public health but also for economic development, stressing that from producers to consumers, everyone must do their part to ensure food safety.

“Let us all stay true to the statements ‘food safety is everyone’s business’ and ‘food safety is a shared responsibility’ as we celebrate this year’s World Food Safety Day.

“Working together, we will continue to strengthen our food safety system and ensure its resilience, robustness and preparedness to the unexpected,” the NAFDAC DG noted.
