Portugal vs Czech Republic LIVE: Latest score and updates for Euro 2024 as Cristiano Ronaldo’s side level after own goal

‘Ronaldo is in the team on merit’ – Portugal coach Martinez for European Championship opener

Cristiano Ronaldo leads Portugal against the Czech Republic at Euro 2024 in the final match of the first round of group matches in Germany.

Roberto Martinez’s unexpected decision over Ronaldo has seen the Selecao cement their reputation as one of the league’s favourites. The Portuguese have one of the most talented squads at the tournament, with a balanced experience – brought by the likes of Ronaldo, Pepe, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva – mixed with the exciting talent of youngsters like Goncalo Inacio, Rafael Leao and Joao Neves.

Although they won Euro 2016, the Selecao want to add to their disappointingly empty trophy cabinet, after losing to Greece in the 2004 final on home soil.

The Czech Republic enter the tournament with few expectations despite a strong performance at Euro 2020, where Patrik Schick finished as co-top scorer as they went to Denmark in the quarter-finals. They will be hoping for an equally strong performance this time around, with the extra experience of players like Tomas Soucek and Adam Hlozek could be crucial.

Euro 2024: Portugal 1-1 Czech Republic

Ronaldo is offside as Fernandes tries to slip the through ball into his path. Portugal come again, with Cancelo and Silva together on the right, and they sweep it from left to right before Ronaldo hands it off to Vitinha. The PSG midfielder’s low drive forces Stanek to make a decent save.

Euro 2024: Portugal 1-1 Czech Republic

The Czech Republic appear to be in need of fresh legs but get away with it this time as Fernandes’ diagonal through ball finds Jota, who is too isolated to create anything.

Euro 2024: Portugal 0-1 Czech Republic

The goal has certainly given the Portuguese step a boost. They attack again, and Silva is the last to have a shot knocked away by Stanek.

GOAL! Portugal 1-1 Czech Republic

GOAL! And it’s so unfortunate for the Czechs.

Bernardo Silva has the ball in the penalty area and puts it back to Vitinha, who makes his first cross towards the far post. Mendes is there to guide the ball to Ronaldo, but he isn’t needed as Stanek claws it straight to Hranac, who can only stand there as it ends up in the back of his own net.

Euro 2024: Portugal 0-1 Czech Republic

Can Portugal respond here? They need a bit more urgency and a lot more quality in the final third.

Roberto Martinez responded to the goal by bringing on Goncalo Inacio and Diogo Jota for Dalot and Leao.

Euro 2024: Portugal 0-1 Czech Republic

It seems that Portugal is really in a hurry now. Perhaps too much haste, because Dias shoots a ball straight over the top.

GOAL! Portugal 0-1 Czech Republic

GOAL! From nowhere, the Czech Republic is leading the way!

The ball comes from the left, but is headed away and Soucek catches it. He passes the ball to Provod, who shoots a curling shot from outside the penalty area over and into the far post!

Euro 2024: Portugal 0-0 Czech Republic

Much better from Portugal, as Vitiniha shoots the ball into Cancelo, who stands with his back to the goal, but plays a nice disguised pass to the overlapping Silva. However, his cross has been cut out.

The Czechs make two substitutions, while Schick and Kuchta are released for Lingr and Chytil.

Euro 2024: Portugal 0-0 Czech Republic

Schick continues his tired performance by flagrantly fouling Cancelo on the edge of the penalty area, and he is shown a yellow card.

Ronaldo takes it, and he fires a decent effort over the wall, but there’s not enough on it as Stanek comes over to catch it.

Euro 2024: Portugal 0-0 Czech Republic

There are no real chances in the second half. It started in a similar way to how the first half ended.

One difference is that Portugal attack more down the right, and it almost pays off as Ruben Dias has stepped forward to score a cross, heading away just before Ronaldo can connect.

Portugal continue to apply pressure and the ball comes back in towards Ronaldo, but Soucek heads away brilliantly.
