Body found during search for missing woman in Waikato bush

A body was found last night during the search for a missing woman in the Wairere Falls area, near Matamata in Waikato.

It is believed to be 67-year-old Pauline Gray who was reported missing from the area on Sunday evening.

It is believed she drove her 2016 Mazda 3 Hatchback to the Wairere Falls circuit and searchers found a jacket believed to belong to Gray on a post near the start of the circuit.

Senior Sergeant Aaron Fraser said police would like to thank members of the public who provided information that helped the search.

“Due to the location and dangerous conditions last night, police were unable to recover the body at that time,” he said. “Special teams are back in the area this morning in an attempt to recover her body.”

Fraser also thanked the land search and rescue team, the rapid response team who supplied staff with food, and local iwi who blessed the site this morning.

“I would also like to thank the family who have been extensively involved in the search process and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

Grey’s death was not treated as suspicious and had to be referred to the coroner.

There will be a rāhui over the Wairere Falls Track for the next seven days.
