New Jersey AG is investigating the death of a police encounter at the Route 9 gas station in Woodbridge

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating a traffic stop that turned deadly in Woodbridge on Friday evening.

Officials say Woodbridge police officers stopped a van at a gas station on Route 9. An arrest warrant was issued for the driver from Nassau County, New York. Officials say the man, whose name was not released, refused to get out and retreated to the back of the van.

Officials say officers eventually broke the windows of the van and used pepper spray, but the man still did not get out of the van.

Officials say officers then heard a loud noise and discovered the man died of an apparent gunshot wound. They say a shotgun was found in the van.
