7-year-old shot dead on Chicago’s Near West Side – NBC Chicago

A seven-year-old child was shot and killed in Chicago’s Near West Side neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to police, the shooting happened in the 2300 block of West Jackson Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m.

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said the child suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was discovered on the ground by responding officers at the aforementioned location.

Police said the child left their home and went to visit a neighbor who lived nearby when he was struck by gunfire.

Responding police officers performed lifesaving measures on the child before transporting him to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No one is currently in custody. Snelling said police are canvassing the nearby area in an effort to find more information about the shooter.

The child was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
