Shocked now that KFC has to remove nuggets from the menu in hundreds of stores

KFC has confirmed it has had to temporarily remove chicken nuggets from the menu in hundreds of stores.

7NEWS.com.au understands KFC stores in Victoria and South Australia will not be serving the snack due to a disruption within the supply chain.

Restaurants will instead offer Popcorn Chicken as a replacement for the affected shared meals.

KFC has confirmed that the nuggets shortage is not related to the recent outbreak of bird flu on poultry farms in Victoria.

More than half a million chickens have been euthanized at five egg farms in south-west Victoria in an effort to stop the spread of the disease.

It’s understood KFC Australia is working with suppliers to replenish affected areas as quickly as possible so the nuggets will be available again in the coming days.

The panic that the shortage was due to Victoria’s bird flu saga came to light after Melbourne radio program 3AW claimed KFC stores could experience shortages as a result of the outbreak.

Last week, food authorities issued an urgent warning to Australian consumers about cooked chicken and eggs, easing concerns about possible bird flu contamination.

“Bird flu (bird flu) is not a food safety concern and it is safe to eat properly handled and cooked chicken meat, eggs and egg products,” the report said in a new statement.

“There is no evidence to show that the virus can be transmitted to humans through properly prepared food.”

Dr. Sandra Cuthbert, CEO of FSANZ, added: “Farms affected by bird flu have been quarantined and the movement of animals and produce has been restricted,” said Dr. Cuthbert.

“Poultry flocks affected by bird flu are being destroyed as part of emergency response to contain the disease as it is highly contagious in poultry. This approach is intended to limit the spread of the disease between birds, not to control food safety.

“For animal products to be sold as food, animals cannot be a source of food safety problems. All retail products must meet strict production requirements in the field of food safety.

“Together, biosafety and food regulation measures build confidence in the safety of the food supply.

“Consumers can be assured that poultry and egg products for sale are safe to eat, with consumers and food businesses always following good hygiene practices when handling and preparing food.”
