With the final of Presumed innocent on Apple TV+ is only a few days away, what better time to discuss theories? We don’t think so!

Without further ado, let’s discuss a theory that’s so obvious it’s so easy to overlook: What if Rusty really did kill Carolyn? Since that wasn’t the case in the source material, and he’s such an obvious suspect, you could easily turn your eyes away. But as Tommy himself pointed out, there are so many clues at this point that they’re starting to look right at us.

So where’s the best place to start here? Well, we know he was present the night of her death, he has a history of violent confrontations, and he clearly had a lot of anger built up towards her at one point. Also, you can’t ignore how unlikeable Jake Gyllenhaal’s character has been from the beginning of the series – is there a single redeeming quality he has?

Now you could try to justify the obvious answer by saying that he was out of his mind when he killed her and has no memory of it; or there could be some other strange twist that explains it. Perhaps the darkest twist is that he killed her and is still not found guilty. The whole show could be a commentary on the current justice system.

The biggest problem with this theory is that

What’s with the fire poker? If Rusty did it, why would someone leave it with that message for Tommy? It’s hard to map that part of it, especially since Rusty wouldn’t have left it there for him, and it’s hard to understand why someone else would suddenly find it and leave it.
