Mayer and Jordan lead Sea Dogs to 6-2 victory over Fightin Phils

BASKETBALL

Marcelo Mayer and Blaze Jordan hit a home run in the first inning to help the Portland Sea Dogs to a 6-2 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils in an Eastern League game Friday night at Hadlock Field.

The Sea Dogs jumped ahead quickly when Roman Anthony led off the bottom of the first with a triple and Mayer followed with a drive to right for his eighth home run of the season. Jordan made it 3-0 when he blanked the Maine Monster for his sixth home run.

Portland scored two runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Kristian Campbell and a fielder’s choice grounder by Jordan.

Campbell, who had extended his 10-game winning streak, drove in Mayer with a fielder’s choice grounder in the seventh inning.

Isaac Coffey earned the win by allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings. He struck out four, walked two and gave up four hits.

FOOTBALL

COPA AMERICA: The first lawsuits have been filed in connection with last weekend’s riots, which broke out as fans without tickets forced their way into the Copa America soccer final at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. One person reported being seriously injured and several ticket holders said they were denied entry.

Miami-Dade County and federal court documents show that as of Friday morning, at least four lawsuits have been filed against the stadium and CONMEBOL, the South American Soccer Confederation, over the chaos that erupted at the gates ahead of Sunday’s match between Argentina and Colombia.

Stadium officials declined to comment beyond saying they would refund unused tickets purchased directly from organizers. They previously said they had hired double the security for Sunday’s final compared to Miami Dolphins games and had exceeded CONMEBOL’s recommendations. The stadium is set to host several matches during the 2026 World Cup.

CYCLING

TOUR DE FRANCE: Tadej Pogacar moved a big step closer to his third Tour de France title by winning another tough mountain stage, pulling away from Jonas Vingegaard and now leading his closest rival by five minutes with two days to go.

Pogacar attacked with about 9 kilometers to go on the final 16-kilometer climb to the Isola 2000 ski resort in the Alps. Vingegaard was unable to follow as Pogacar chased down Danish Jumbo Visma teammate Matteo Jorgenson, an American rider.

Jorgenson was caught two kilometres from the finish as Pogacar raced to his fourth stage win of the year and his 15th Tour stage win of his career.

TENNIS

NORTHEAST OPEN: Rafael Nadal reached the semi-finals for the first time in two years after surviving a four-hour quarter-final in Bastad, Sweden.

Nadal defeated the No. 36 seed, Mariano Navone of Argentina, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-5.

GOLF

LPGA number: Chanettee Wannasae closed out the competition with a birdie-eagle on the two par-5 holes at Highland Meadows for a 6-under 66 and a one-stroke lead at the Dana Open for Children in Sylvania, Ohio.

The 20-year-old Thai player entered the weekend with a total of 11-under 131. Defending champion Linn Grant of Sweden was one stroke behind, along with Xiyu “Janet” Lin of China.

COLLEGES

FOOTBALL: The University of Alabama’s board of trustees has approved a resolution to name the football field at Bryant-Denny Stadium after former coach Nick Saban.

Saban stepped down as coach in January after leading Alabama to six national championships in 17 seasons.

A naming ceremony for the field will be held on September 7 during the game in South Florida.

HORSE RACING

BAFFERT SUSPENSION: Churchill Downs has lifted Bob Baffert’s long-term suspension, allowing the Hall of Fame trainer to return his horses to racing at the historic track and affiliate facilities. Baffert was suspended for more than three years after testing negative for drugs on Medina Spirit during the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

The announcement came after Baffert released a statement taking responsibility for the late stallion Medina Spirit’s failed drug test. Medina Spirit finished first, but Kentucky racing stewards ultimately disqualified the horse and elevated runner-up Mandaloun to the Derby winner.

FOOTBALL

NFL games: The Baltimore Ravens have signed former Chicago Bears safety Eddie Jackson to a one-year contract.

Jackson, 30, bolsters a safety position that includes Kyle Hamilton and Marcus Williams. Jackson is expected to step into the role left behind by Geno Stone, who signed with Cincinnati after leading the AFC with seven interceptions last season.
