WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Thanks to dominant performances from Shane Murphy and Peyton Pallette and a solo home run from DJ Gladney, the Winston-Salem Italian Beef defeated the Asheville Tourists 1-0 on Friday night at Truist Stadium before 6,823 fans.

Winston-Salem (41-47) handed the ball to left-hander Shane Murphy, and the southpaw swung. After allowing a two-out single in the first inning, the Chandler, Arizona, native dominated. Murphy retired every batter he faced after the first inning, pitched six innings, struck out four and retired the last 16 batters he faced.

Offensively, Italian Beef Murphy couldn’t provide run support. Winston-Salem loaded the bases in three consecutive innings, but Asheville (37-48) stayed out of trouble and the game remained scoreless after six.

In the seventh, Peyton Pallette took over for Murphy and kept rolling. The Benton, Arkansas native put the Tourists in order, striking out two in the seventh inning before Winston-Salem broke the deadlock in the bottom half of the frame.

In the Tourists’ bullpen, leadoff man DJ Gladney fell behind, but he found a hanging curveball and hit it over the wall in left, giving the Dash a 1-0 lead.

With a 1-0 lead, Pallette struck out two more in the eighth inning before Zach Franklin came in to make the save in the ninth. After leadoff man Yamal Encarnacion reached third and went to third with one out, Franklin went all out, striking out Narbe Cruz and getting Luis Baez to pop out to end the game, giving Winston-Salem a 1-0 victory.

Between Murphy and Pallette, the two combined to retire 22 consecutive batters from the first through the ninth inning. Pallette picked up the win while Ian Foggo was tabbed for the loss, with Franklin picking up his fourth save.

Winston-Salem and Asheville meet Saturday night for game two, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
