Raptors give up six-run 6th, lose to Vibes to open road trip | News, Sports, Jobs

A back-and-forth battle turned into a blowout Friday in Colorado Springs as the Rocky Mountain Vibes defeated Ogden 11-6 for the first contest in a nine-game road trip for the Raptors.

Friday officially brought the return of pitcher Mitchell Stone to Ogden’s starting rotation. The 2023 starter is back with the Raptor and threw four innings against the Vibes, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, striking out six and walking one.

Pearce Howard drove in two runs in the first for Ogden (24-28, 2-2 second half) and the Raptors added a Landen Barns sacrifice fly, an Elliott Good RBI triple and a Jack Cone RBI double in the third inning to go up 5-3.

Dane Tofteland hit a solo homer for the Vibes (23-27, 2-2) in the bottom half of the third and Mason Sykes added a sacrificial fly to tie it 5-5.

With the score knotted, Stone exited with a no-decision after four innings.

Shane Gustafson quickly threw the next five outs for Ogden over six batters, then his own throwing error with two outs in the sixth opened the floodgates. Rocky Mountain followed his error with four straight singles to go up 8-5; Christian Griffin then took over the mound, gave up two walks and a single, and the score was 11-5.

Gabriel Pacheco pitched two stellar innings to close for Ogden, striking out two and facing just one over the minimum due to an error. But the Raptors managed just two more hits the rest of the way, both in an eighth inning where another Cone RBI accounted for the final score.

First baseman Casey Mize drove in three for Rocky Mountain, which batted 7 for 14 with runners in scoring position. Stephen Wilmer and Josh Day each hit 3 for 5.

Cone and Howard had two RBIs apiece for Ogden. The Raptors’ 10 hits came from five batters who had two hits apiece: Cone, Howard, Good, Cole Jordan and Raymond Gil.

The two teams end the series at 6:35 pm Saturday and 1:05 pm Sunday.
