Delhi Police exposes kidney racket; 8 arrested, Rs 35 lakh each charged

Delhi Police has busted an inter-state kidney transplant racket and arrested eight persons, including its ringleader, after a week-long operation. The gang, which operated in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, used forged documents to facilitate illegal transplants in multiple hospitals. Besides the arrests, seven persons, including donors and recipients, have been legally required to appear before the authorities.

The investigation revealed that the gang exploited donors from lower income groups, who were promised between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 6 lakh. However, the group charged the recipients between Rs 35 lakh and Rs 40 lakh for the transplants. The gang members, some of whom were working as transplant coordinators at reputed hospitals, used their insider knowledge to orchestrate the illegal operations.

The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch found that the gang had facilitated transplants in 11 hospitals across the states. The investigation began after a woman alleged that she had paid Rs 35 lakh to two persons, Sandeep Arya and Vijay Kashyap alias Sumit, to arrange a donor for her husband. After extensive raids, the authorities recovered forged documents and files related to the illegal transplants.
