1 woman dead, 3 injured after part of building collapses near Grant Road Station; footage emerges

Mumbai: In a shocking incident that has come to light in Mumbai, a woman died and at least three others were injured when parts of a balcony and a slab of an old building collapsed. The incident took place near the Grant Road railway station on Saturday, July 20 at around 10:30 am. A part of the balcony and slabs of the second and third floors of the Rubinissa Manzil building collapsed.

According to an IANS report, “Seven to eight residents were trapped on the top floor of the four-storey building and the Mumbai Fire Brigade, along with police, ambulances and municipal personnel, rushed to launch a rescue operation. After about an hour, the body of one person was pulled out from the rubble and the injured were taken to nearby Bhatia Hospital for treatment. More people are still feared to be trapped under the rubble and frantic efforts are on to rescue them, BMC Disaster Control said.”

The Mumbai Fire Brigade has declared it a Level I emergency. Rescue teams have swung into action and work is underway to ensure everyone is safely rescued from the building.

Traffic congestion due to vehicles

The Mumbai Traffic Police said on Twitter (formerly known as Twitter): “Due to a collapsed building near Grant Road Station West, the station road is closed for traffic.”

Heavy rains have caused chaos in Mumbai over the past few days as residents of Mumbai are facing traffic jams and waterlogging. Waterlogging was seen across Mumbai as heavy rains lashed several parts of the city. South Mumbai and Thane district were hit by heavy rains on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, DRM – Mumbai Central, WR contacted X and said, “Due to waterlogging in Porbandar – Kanalus section, Bhavnagar Division Train No. 19003 Dadar – Bhusaval Khandesh Exp dated 21/07/2024 has been cancelled. The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.”
