The Gauteng Department of Education was reportedly concerned about the welfare of a Grade 7 learner who fell from a second-floor balcony at Laerskool Mayville school in Pretoria.

Grade 7 student falls from school building

According to the Pretoria RecordThe primary school pupil was in a critical condition at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. It was claimed that emergency personnel airlifted the pupil from the premises to hospital and that officials immediately informed her parents of the accident. Department officials reportedly confirmed that the incident occurred during school hours on 18 July 2024.

Education department investigates

The department launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the horrific fall and sent its psychosocial support team to the school to support the students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Short news reported that the ongoing investigation into the Carltonville school bus tragedy has delayed the funerals of the students.

The 55-year-old driver charged in the tragic accident was due to appear in court as investigations continued.

Gauteng MEC of Education Matome Chiloane urged families to postpone funeral preparations until authorities have completed their investigations.
