Kuwait: Indian family of 4 from Kerala killed in fire at their apartment in Abbasiya

An Indian family of four died in a fire that broke out in their apartment in Kuwait City late Friday night, local authorities said. The dead included an Indian couple and their two children who had returned from a holiday in Kerala the same day.

According to The Arab Times newspaper, Mathews Mulackal, his wife Lini Abraham and their two children, all from Neerattupuram in Alappuzha, Kerala, died of asphyxiation in a fire.

The fire, reportedly caused by an air conditioning short circuit, broke out around 8 p.m. in their second-floor apartment in Abbasiya neighborhood.

The newspaper report said that Mathews Mulackal worked for Reuters news agency, while his wife Lini was a nurse at Adan Hospital in Al Ahmadi Governorate. The couple’s children attended Bhavans School in Kuwait.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Kuwait has expressed its deepest condolences over the deaths of Indians in the Arab nation. The embassy also said that it is in touch with the families of the victims and will ensure that the remains are repatriated at the earliest.

The incident comes days after the devastating fire that killed 45 Indians at a work facility in Kuwait last month.
