The subscriber growth beat analysts’ predictions that Netflix would add about 5 million new customers from April through June. The new signups brought Netflix’s total global subscriber count to more than 277 million.

The company reported diluted earnings per share of $4.88, compared with consensus forecasts of $4.74 per share, LSEG said. Revenue for the quarter came in at $9.56 billion, in line with estimates.

Wall Street investors are closely watching the growth of Netflix’s ad-supported subscription service, fueled by the company’s stricter rules on password sharing, higher prices for ad-free subscriptions and new bundles for consumers, such as Comcast’s “StreamSaver” package, which combines Netflix with Peacock and Apple TV+.

Netflix reported that its ad market subscriber base increased 34 percent from the previous quarter, but the company did not say how many subscribers opted in to the option.
