Troy Aikman Offers Resolution in Trademark Dispute with Lamar Jackson

Troy Aikman has an idea to resolve his trademark dispute with Lamar Jackson. It involves the two of them talking it out in front of another No. 8. And of course — beer.

Aikman, the three-time Super Bowl-winning Hall of Fame quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys turned broadcaster, has been busy promoting his beer brand, EIGHT. It’s a fitting name for Aikman, considering he wore the number 8 throughout his storied career.

The problem is that Jackson, the two-time (and reigning) NFL MVP, disputes Aikman’s use of Eight. Jackson has not only worn the number, but also filed multiple trademarks for it. And while Aikman uses “EIGHT” and Jackson’s trademarks include “8,” Jackson’s attorney noted that they are too similar and (according to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein) EIGHT “is likely to cause confusion, cause error, or mislead potential consumers.”

Aikman, always willing to do a little publicity, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday night to propose a solution.

“Hey Lamar – this sounds like a worthy conversation over a couple of cold EIGHT beers,” Aikman suggested. “Maybe Steve Young can mediate??”

Young, of course, like Aikman and Jackson, also wore number 8 during his Hall of Fame career.

To keep the theme going, perhaps the meeting could be held somewhere in South Carolina, the eighth state admitted to the Union. Or, if that doesn’t work, you could do a lot worse than San Diego, the eighth largest city in the United States.
