Manchester United secured their first win of this summer’s pre-season by beating Rangers 2-0 at Murrayfield.

Leny Yoro and Jadon Sancho both started in relatively strong first-half formations. Summer signing Yoro was calm on the ball and sharp when called into action at the back, slotting in well with a final effort to get Rangers in behind.

Sancho was relatively calm on the left flank, while Amad Diallo stole the show on the other flank with a brilliant performance.

He was a constant threat down the right flank and gave Ethan Wheatley an early chance, but the striker then fired wide when he should have scored.

Amad got his reward for his performance before half-time, cutting inside his left leg and firing the ball beautifully into the bottom corner.

Erik ten Hag made ten changes at half-time, Andre Onana was the only player to keep his place and the pace of the game was, as expected, somewhat slower.

There were few real chances until Joe Hugill doubled the lead with a superb strike, the 20-year-old firing the ball in off the underside of the bar after Maxi Oyedele had played it in.

Onana was rarely troubled by the keeper, as Will Fish managed to avoid danger well when Rabbi Matondo was free in the penalty area.

United’s goalkeeper had to intervene in the closing stages as he managed to save Danilo’s volley to keep a clean sheet.

United improved after their first pre-season defeat to Rosenborg and now travel to the United States to prepare for the new season.

United play Arsenal at SoFi Stadium in California next weekend, followed by games against Real Betis and Liverpool.
