Play-offs for relegation Div 3: disappointment for Nobber
Karl Casserly from Nobber

Nobber 2-9 Kilmainham 2-11

Nobber made the short journey through the North Meath countryside last Friday night to take on Kilmainham in their Division 3 relegation play-off. The venue was Moynalty and both playing conditions and weather conditions were perfect for players and spectators alike to enjoy an entertaining slice of club football.

Nobber started strongly in the opening minutes with a well taken goal that was drilled hard and low into the away end by corner forward Joe Tierney. This was quickly followed by a well taken score from midfielder Dean Halpin. Kilmainham responded with a number of scores of their own but the first quarter belonged to the black and orange. Conor Owens, Niall Farrell and Halpin again scored points for Martin Morgan’s attacks. The Deesiders moved the ball well from defence to attack and snuffed out any danger from Kilmainham. The full back line of Tony McEntee, Eanna Fagan and Barry Cassidy remained strong throughout the first half. Nobber remained on the scoreboard with a number of well taken free throws from Owens (3) as well as a fine score from striker Karl Casserly.

Half time score – Nobber 1 – 8 (11) Kilmainham 0 – 3 (3)

The second half was a different story from Nobber’s perspective. This was certainly a game of two halves. Kilmainham started the second period like a train, moving the ball with great speed and intensity. The red and blacks ran straight at the Nobber defence and within the first 5 minutes they had reduced the black and amber lead to 1 point. It was truly game on. Nobber responded with Casserly taking the ball and finishing well into the back of the net to increase the Nobber men’s lead to 2 – 8 v 1 – 7. In the remaining 25 minutes Nobber would score just once more with the Kells men outscoring their opponents 1 – 4 (7) v 0 – 1. Thomas Murtagh raised a white flag; however it was not enough to ultimately secure the victory. The North Meath men had chances to take the game into extra time but it was not to be.

A disappointing result for Martin Morgan’s charges, especially after being so far ahead in the first half. The result means that Nobber will be operating in Division 4 of the league next season. The team and management will need to quickly turn their attention to their championship campaign which begins in just over three weeks time on Sunday 11th August against Blackall Gaels.
