Biggest Open Championship winners and losers from round 3, including Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth

Despite a bogey on the final hole, Billy Horschel had a strong Saturday, making four birdies in six holes to end his front nine before conditions cost him a few strokes. Horschel made a 31-foot birdie putt on the par-4 seventh.

On the previous hole, he got his 92-yard approach to tap-in range for another birdie, and he was able to save par on the 10^e from 10 feet. Horschel will be looking for his first major career win and his third top 10 at a major championship in 41 starts.

Daniel Brown, who had to qualify this week to get into the Open Championship, struggled on Saturday, playing in the final group. It was a rollercoaster round with a 2-over 73. Brown had five birdies compared to five bogeys and a double bogey.

He trails Horschel by one stroke after his first double bogey on the final hole today. Brown is attempting to become the third player since 1914 to win a major on their first start. He would join Ben Curtis, who won the 2003 Open Championship, and Keegan Bradley, who won the 2011 PGA Championship.

He would also become the first player since Collin Morikawa in 2021 to win the Open on his first start.

Shane Lowry, who led going into the third round, birdied the par-5 fourth to open up a three-shot lead. But he stumbled afterward, making double bogey on the par-3 eighth bey in the coffin bunker.

Lowry made three bogeys in four holes on the back nine en route to a 6-over 77. He ranked 71st in total strokes gained, 77th in strokes gained putting and 73rd in total strokes gained putting.^rd in strokes gained around the green as he trails the leader by three strokes going into Sunday’s final round.

Xander Schauffele started 4-under through 10 and stayed afloat, finishing with a 2-under 69. Conditions were not favorable for him on the last eight holes. However, Schauffele is at 3-under par and one stroke behind the leader. Horschel and Schauffele were the only two golfers in the last 10 groups to score under par on Saturday.

Schauffele is hoping to earn his second major win in three starts, as well as top 10s at all four majors this year. If Schauffele also finishes in the top 20, it would be his 11th^e consecutive top 20 finishes at a major championship.

Joaquin Niemann had an 8 on the par-3 eighth, the death knell for a bogey-free 4-under 31 on the back nine yesterday. Saturday was a similar story when Niemann posted a big number on the par-4 11th^e. After a score of 2-under on the front nine and a bogey on the par-4 10^ehe made a 9 on the next hole.

He had two penalty strokes, one off the tee and another on his approach shot that went straight out of bounds onto the train tracks. His nine was one of nine double bogeys on that hole, as he shot 7-over 42 on the back nine. He shot 5-over par on the day and is +5 heading into the final round.

The chance to get into the mix and go after major win No. 6 will have to wait until at least next April for Brooks Koepka. He didn’t make a birdie at all on Saturday. He double-bogeyed the par-5 fourth. After bogeying the par-4 10^eHe made four consecutive bogeys from holes 13 through 16, before posting a 7-over 78 in the third round.

Of the 80 golfers who made the cut, he was ranked 76th^e total strokes won and 78^e in strokes gained off the tee. He now stands at 8-over going into Sunday’s final round.

Thirston Lawrence and Sam Burns both posted the lowest scores in the third round with a 6-under 65. Lawrence shot a 6-under 30 on the front nine. Burns, on the other hand, started the front nine and back nine with bogeys, but was able to respond. He birdied five of the six holes from holes 3-8 to close the front nine with a 4-under 32.

Burns made two birdies in a row on holes 11 and 12, before making another birdie on the par-5 hole 16^e. Lawrence and Burns were the only two golfers to make birdies on the 11 on Saturday^e.

It looks like Patrick Cantlay will continue to have the monkey on his back to win a major, until 2025. On Saturday, Cantlay only made a birdie on the par-5 16^eHe bogeyed the eighth and the thirteenth^e while making a double bogey on the 11th^e. A score of 4 over par 75 on the day of the move is not helpful in a tournament, especially when a major championship is at stake.

Cantlay enters the course on Sunday at 3-over par. He ranks 63rd in total strokes gained, 67th in strokes gained off the tee and 68th^e approach obtained by blows as signs of struggle.

The 2017 Open Championship winner had a rollercoaster round that included four birdies compared to five bogeys and a double bogey. Jordan Spieth couldn’t turn that trademark moving round into action to put him in contention.

He birdied a birdie or two and then gave it away. He made back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13, including a 58-foot birdie putt on the last. But he gave away both strokes with bogeys on 15 and 17.

Regardless of the score, any time you can put one on the scorecard it’s memorable. Despite being 7-over-par, Si Woo Kim managed a hole-in-one on the par-3 17^eAt 238 yards, it was the longest ace in Open Championship history. It was also the first hole-in-one on the 17^e at Royal Troon in an Open Championship.

That came after he birdied the previous hole and finished 3-under on his last three holes, leaving him at even par and still at 5-over par for the final round.
