The recent cold snap in New South Wales has created some spectacular scenes in the Snowy Valleys, where the Sculpture Trail has taken on a whole new form.

Photographer Chantelle Bruton of Tumbarumba was up early to capture the blanket of snow that transformed the Bago State Forest into a winter wonderland on Tuesday (July 16).

“So excited!!! SNOW!!!!” she declared on the now-viral Facebook post.

“I was running around like an excited little kid this morning, and yes, I literally skipped and jumped through it!! I couldn’t contain my excitement or wipe the smile off my face!”

Located between Batlow and Laurel Hill, the Bago Sculpture Forest features a variety of public art sculptures by local, national and international artists.

It is the newest addition to the 150km Snowy Valleys Sculpture Trail which covers Adelong, Tumut, Batlow, Talbingo and Tumbarumba.

Perhaps the most striking image Chantelle captured is that of British artist Sean Henry. Seated man at the Pilot Hill Arboretum.

The painted bronze statue of a bearded man is often mistaken for a living person, but a foot of freshly fallen snow evokes memories of Jack Nicholson’s icy death in the iconic film The shining.

In Chantelle’s photo, a snow angel appears to be hugging him from behind!

The nearby work of Icelandic artist Steinunn Thorarinsdottir Contemplation captures another frozen moment and seems to transport the pensive figure back to the artist’s homeland.

The spherical work of Czech sculptor Vaclav Fiala Universe looks almost edible, like a giant pretzel under the layer of snow.

A heavy work horse that breaks its chains has been transformed into a buffalo-like creature by the snow that has accumulated on its yoke.

Border areas by Australian artists Andy Townsend and Suzie Bleach captures the idea of breaking out and entering a new frontier. And our heroic horse seems to be in the middle of a long and icy journey.

Seeing sculptures in the snow seems like an experience not to be missed. If you want to see the frozen forest with your own eyes, keep an eye on the weather forecast, bring warm clothes and be careful on the road.
