American Billy Horschel leads the way after three days of action at Royal Troon Golf Club, where a one-shot competition was held ahead of the all-important final day of The Open.

Behind him are six players with a tie at -3: Thirston Lawrence, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose And Daniel BrownWorld number 1 Scottie Scheffler is one stroke behind at -2 and remains within reach of the top spot.

Rory McIlroy, who became Open champion in 2014, admitted that the windy conditions in Troon “took over” after missing the six-over cut line on Friday and finishing the second day at +11,

On Friday the Northern Irishman explained: “I didn’t adjust well at all to the left to right wind on the back nine yesterdayand when I went out this afternoon in that gust of wind on the front, like I said, it got the better of me and I felt quite uncomfortable on a couple of shots.”

Other big names who will not be involved in the weekend US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau (+9), world number 4 Ludvig Aberg (+9), world number 5 Wyndham Clark (+16), world number 7 Viktor Hovland (+10), world number 12 Tommy Fleetwood (+9) and three-time Open winner Tiger Woods (+14).
