WTA Review: Diana Shnaider reaches Hungarian Grand Prix final

Top-seeded Russian Diana Shnaider reached the final of the Hungarian Grand Prix with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Germany’s Eva Lys in Budapest on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Shnaider stopped all three break points she faced and took advantage of four double faults from her opponent to beat Lys in 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Shnaider will be going for her third title of the year on Sunday when she takes on unseeded Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who won 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 against Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

Sasnovich overcame 17 double faults to come back from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to beat Schmiedlova in 2 hours and 46 minutes.

Palermo Women Open

Top-seeded Qinwen Zheng of China defeated fourth-seeded Diane Parry of France 7-5, 6-4 in the semi-finals to reach the final in Italy.

Zheng will face second-seeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in the championship match. Zheng is the reigning champion.

Zheng saved 3 of 4 break points and won 84.8 percent (28 of 33) of her first-serve points. Parry saved 2 of 5 break points and won 69.4 percent (25 of 36) of her first-serve points.

Muchova defeated Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1, 6-1 in her semifinal. Muchova held a 4-0 lead in aces over Begu, the 2022 champion.
