6 players who should leave Arsenal this summer

6 players who should leave Arsenal this summer

Arsenal’s 2023/24 season may not have produced any silverware, but it has confirmed their position as a genuine top-flight side heading towards the top of the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta has made the Gunners a regular title contender again, but he needs a bit more quality in his squad if he is to push them over the line and win a major tournament.

Over the last two years it has become clear that there are certain players that Arteta simply does not trust in big games or key moments. When you go up against Manchester City you can’t take passengers and you have to be ruthless with your selection.

Here are six players who should leave Arsenal for their own good and be moved if the Gunners want to win the Premier League this season.

Aaron Ramsdale

The permanent arrival of David Raya from Brentford should mean the end of Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal.

That’s a shame, even from a neutral point of view. Ramsdale has a good relationship with the club’s fanbase and his behaviour after being dropped to Raya last year was widely praised.

He is not a world champion, but Ramsdale is too good to just sit on the bench at Emirates Stadium. Another team that loves and values him could come along at any moment.

Kieran Tierney

Did you forget that Kieran Tierney was an Arsenal player? You probably forgot that Kieran Tierney was an Arsenal player.

Again, this is a sign of the Gunners’ growth rather than a detractor from an obviously talented player, but Arsenal have long since stopped needing the Scotland international.

Tierney spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad, but it seems unlikely he will return there given the Basque club recently signed Sergio Gomez from City.

Remember how we talked above about Arteta losing the trust of players? There is a lot to be said that he should not trust Thomas Partey anymore.

Whenever the Ghanaian faltered in the latter stages of the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, he was often the only Arsenal player to lack composure and make poor decisions under pressure.

That title drought isn’t going to end if he continues to get meaningful minutes. Arsenal need improvements in midfield.

Emile Smith Rowe

Towards the end of the 2021/22 season, it looked as if Emile Smith Rowe would become a star player for Arsenal and England for the rest of the decade.

But he simply hasn’t progressed as far as many had hoped. The midfielder has struggled with injuries and hasn’t done enough to regain a place in Arteta’s regular squad, often playing just a handful of minutes here and there.

His last goal for Arsenal came all the way back in a 4-2 win over Chelsea when the Blues were still under sanctions from the British government over Roman Abramovich’s ownership and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Which, you know, was a long time ago.

Smith Rowe is an exceptionally talented footballer and one of the most fun to watch in the Premier League on his day. He just needs a chance to spread his wings again.

Fabio Vieira

In the summer of 2022, Porto sold two of their most prized talents: Vitinha to Paris Saint-Germain and Fabio Vieira to Arsenal.

Gunners fans must be furious when they see Vitinha’s fantastic progress at PSG, compared to the flashy performances Vieira has produced so far.

Again, this is a ruthless assumption. If Vieira still doesn’t deliver, he may never get back on Arsenal’s current trajectory.

Travel Nelson

Arsenal fans will never forget Reiss Nelson’s winning goal against Bournemouth in March 2023, which looked like the club was on its way to the title.

Nelson was given a new contract that summer, but he has still failed to rise up the Arsenal pecking order. With the Gunners in the market for strikers, Nelson has little chance of making an impact from here on.
