Kedarnath: 3 dead, several injured

Three pilgrims were killed and eight others injured after they were hit by a landslide on their way to the Kedarnath shrine on Sunday morning.

The State Disaster Response Force said that the pilgrims had started their journey from Gaurikund early in the day. As they approached Cheedwasa, a massive landslide occurred, killing three people on the spot.

Rescue teams rushed to the spot to help the survivors and the injured were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident and condoled with the families of the deceased.

Dhami on X wrote: “The news that some pilgrims have been injured due to debris and heavy stones falling from the hillock near the Kedarnath Yatra route is very sad. May God grant the bereaved families strength to bear this immense grief.”

CM Dhami also said that he is in regular touch with officials regarding the rescue and relief operations. He has directed them to provide necessary assistance and medical treatment to those injured in the accident.

Meanwhile, a new group of 3,113 pilgrims, including 707 women, left a base camp early Sunday morning to take part in the annual Amarnath pilgrimage in Kashmir’s southern Himalayas, officials told PTI.

The 52-day yatra began on June 29 from the twin routes of Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Ganderbal districts. Nearly 390,000 pilgrims have so far visited the 3,880-metre-high sacred cave shrine, which houses the naturally formed ice shivlingam.
