3 dead, 8 injured after landslide at Kedarnath pilgrimage site near Gaurikund

Three pilgrims were killed and eight others injured when they were hit by a landslide on their way to the Kedarnath shrine on Sunday morning.

According to the State Disaster Response Force, the pilgrims started their journey early in the morning from Gaurikund. Near the Chirbasa area on the Gaurikund-Kedarnath trekking route, they were hit by a massive landslide, killing three people on the spot.

The rescue team rushed to the spot and started the operation to help the survivors. The injured were taken to the nearest hospital.

Two of the deceased were from Maharashtra, while one was from Rudraprayad in Uttarakhand.

The deceased has been identified as Kishore Arun Parate (31) of

Nagpur, Maharashtra, Sunil Mahadev Kale (24) from Jalna, Maharashtra and

Anurag Bisht from Tilwara, Rudraprayag.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident and offered his condolences to the bereaved families.

“The news of pilgrims being injured due to debris and heavy stones falling from the hillock near the Kedarnath Yatra route is very sad,” Dhami wrote on X in Hindi.

“May God grant the relatives the strength to bear this immense grief,” he added.

CM Dhami also said that he is in constant touch with the authorities regarding the rescue and relief efforts and has directed them to provide necessary assistance and treatment to the people injured in the accident.

New group of over 3,000 pilgrims leaves Jammu for Amarnath shrine

Meanwhile, a new group of 3,113 pilgrims, including 707 women, left a base camp early Sunday morning to take part in the annual Amarnath pilgrimage in Kashmir’s southern Himalayas, officials told PTI.

The 52-day yatra began on June 29 from the twin routes of Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Ganderbal districts.

So far, nearly 3.9 million pilgrims have paid their respects at the 3,880-metre-high sacred cave temple, home to the naturally formed ice shivlingam.

“May God grant the relatives the strength to bear this immense grief,” he added.
