How Thar owners end up paying almost Rs 800,000 above the base price, a YouTuber explains

A YouTuber’s breakdown of the Mahindra Thar’s on-road price has revealed that it includes an additional cost of nearly Rs. 8 lakh. Anshu Maurya, better known as YouTube Wale Baba, explains in a video how the final price works out to around ₹18.5 lakh – despite the base price being just ₹10.6 lakh.

The owners of the SUV will end up paying an additional ₹8 lakh, which includes GST, cess, insurance, registration and other charges.
Mahindra recently unveiled Thar’s new 5-door model called Roxx, which will be launched on August 15.

“How much does this cost? That cost? ₹18.5 lakh. But I will show you the reality of the Indian government,” he says in the clip.

Maurya, holding an invoice for a Thar purchase, points out that the basic payment is ₹10,64,000. However, the central and state goods and services taxes (GST) are 14% each, which comes to ₹2,96,000.

Then there is a 20% tax, which amounts to over ₹2,12,000.

The total amount is currently ₹15,75,000, but the YouTuber explains that if you add the registration fee, insurance and 1% additional tax, the total comes to ₹18,50,000.

“I have paid around Rs 5 lakh in taxes for this car,” Maurya says in Hindi. “Let that sink in for a moment. The CGST and SGST are fine, but there is also the cess, which is 20%.”

“Tell me, who pays for that? It’s not the government. (The money) disappears from our pockets. Plus, we have to pay income tax.”

According to his YouTube channel, Maurya bought his Thar in March. He posted a video at the time thanking his subscribers for making it possible.

As of July 21, the on-road price in its hometown Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, ranges between ₹ 13.24 Lakh and ₹ 20.65 Lakh depending on the variant.

Mahindra Thar is a popular choice among off-road enthusiasts. The automaker recently unveiled its 5-door variant, called Thar Roxx. The new model is expected to be launched on August 15.

Experts estimate that the new Thar will be priced between ₹15 lakh and ₹22 lakh.
