Igor Thiago scored twice on his debut as Brentford began their pre-season with a commanding 5-2 win over AFC Wimbledon.

Joe Lewis gave the Dons a third-minute lead, but Thiago’s well-taken brace and Yoane Wissa’s penalty put the Bees in control at half-time. Kevin Schade and Bryan Mbeumo, two of 10 half-time substitutes made by head coach Thomas Frank, extended the visitors’ lead before Mat Stevens added a late consolation goal.

Thiago, who completed his move from Club Brugge on 1 July, was selected to lead the line alongside Tony Yogane and Wissa. Goalkeeper Matt Cox started in goal against his former club.

Wimbledon took the lead in the third minute, with Ji-soo Kim giving away a corner, which was headed in by former Bee Jake Reeves, and Lewis leaping highest to beat him with a cracking header.

The Dons had a chance to double their lead after 20 minutes, but Hus Biler’s header, which connected with an Alistair Smith cross at the far post, flew just over the bar.

Brentford were level three minutes later. Yunus Emre Konak played a short pass to Thiago in the 18-yard box, whose initial effort was blocked by Lewis. The striker got the ball under his control again and took a second bite of the cherry at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, firing hard and low past Owen Goodman, much to the delight of the travelling Bees fans.

Moments after the restart, a long-range shot from Ryan Johnson, which deflected off Ji-soo’s head, was deflected around the post by Cox with maximum reach.

At the other end, Thiago found some space on Brentford’s right and fired a shot with his back heel in the direction of Roerslev. The defender’s attempted shot was well saved by Goodman.

The impressive Thiago scored a second just after the half hour. After a long spell of possession, Fin Stevens saw the Brazilian running and broke the lines with a perfect pass. Thiago pulled away, waited for Goodman to come off his line and lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Stevens was again in the role of creator moments later, lifting the ball over the Dons defence, but Goodman – who again raced forward to close the angle – smothered Myles Peart-Harris’ effort.

Reeves’ long-range shot was saved by Cox before the Bees added a third in the final minute of the half. Wissa cut in from the right to meet Vitaly Janelt’s lofted pass and positioned himself expertly to draw a foul from Biler inside the box. Wissa dusted himself off and curled the ball into the bottom corner from the penalty spot.

Schade and Mbeumo extend Brentford lead after the break; test player Armstrong one of 10 half-time substitutions

Frank made 10 substitutions at half-time, with goalkeeper Cox the only player left from the first half.

Midfielder Stuart Armstrong, who was on trial with the Bees after leaving Southampton, was given the chance to impress.

In the 56th minute Brentford worked the ball from back to front with impressive speed. Iwan Morgan dropped a shoulder to beat Lewis on his way into the penalty area and lifted the ball just over the bar.

Valdimarsson replaced Cox just after the hour, while Dons manager Johnnie Jackson also made a number of changes.

Brentford added a fourth goal in the 66th minute, with Schade jumping on a loose pass, rounding goalkeeper Lewis Ward and slotting the ball into the far corner from a difficult angle.

Mbeumo was next to score, passing James Ball with a clever turn and firing his left leg into the roof of the next thrower.

Mat Stevens scored for Wimbledon in the 81st minute, heading home a cross from James Tilley from the penalty spot to beat Valdimarsson.

Frank happy with winning start

Head coach Thomas Frank was pleased with what he saw at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

“I’m happy with the performance and that’s always the most important thing,” said the Bees boss.

“Four of our key attackers scored, which is very positive.”

On Igor Thiago’s two-goal debut, Frank added: “Positive experiences give confidence and it’s always nice for a striker to score. There’s still a lot to do and of course he’ll have to do it in the Premier League, but it’s a good start.”

Schade discusses his goal in Wimbledon victory

Kevin Schade admits he was “a bit lucky” with his goal in the win over AFC Wimbledon – but the forward was happy with the Bees’ performance on Saturday afternoon.

Asked how he felt after the win, the German replied: “I’m tired, but it was good to play the first game, even if it lasted 45 minutes, after a long break.

“We are not happy with the goals conceded, but scoring five goals is good in the first game.”

Schade explained the move for his goal: “I expected the pass back, I ran through it and then I had a bit of luck! But it was a good goal for me to score.

“I wanted to go around the keeper, but I expected him to block the shot. That’s why I wanted to shoot the ball away as soon as I got into position. Maybe it was a bit of luck after all!”
