The Russo Brothers to Direct AVENGERS 5 & SECRET WARS

The Russo Brothers to Direct AVENGERS 5 & SECRET WARS

Earlier this week, it was announced that directors Joe and Anthony Russo are in talks to helm the film. Avengers 5 (still untitled after the release of The Kang Dynasty) and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Russo Brothers are no strangers to the MCU, having previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War And Avengers: EndgameThese films are not only among the most popular Marvel Studios releases to date – with Infinity War And Endgamewhich undoubtedly represent the pinnacle of quality for the franchise, but they also demonstrate how adept the filmmakers are at juggling multiple characters and subplots.

This certainly makes them an ideal match for the next two Avengers movies…right?

News of the Russos’ return to the MCU has been largely positive, but there are also those who feel that this is a step backwards as Disney/Marvel is simply falling back on what has worked in the past.

That may well be true. After all, there were already several other directors at the helm Avengers 5 before stepping back, and follow-up reports indicate that Kevin Feige reached out to a number of as-yet-unnamed filmmakers before ultimately rejoining the Russos.

It’s also worth noting that the Russos’ non-MCU projects haven’t exactly been a huge success with audiences or critics. However, we can’t imagine they’ve lost their talent when it comes to working within the Marvel Studios system to make a killer superhero movie.

Marvel Studios has had a rough time of it in recent years, with Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania And The miracles underperformed (we’re being generous on that last one) at the box office and also received mixed/negative reviews – something that was virtually unheard of in the glory days of the MCU.

Can anyone blame Feige and co. for wanting to recapture the old magic by bringing back the tried and true Russo Brothers?

What do you think of this development? Are you happy to see the Russos return, or would you rather see the studio take a risk and bring in a new voice for these next big MCU event films?

Despite Jonathan Majors’ dismissal, Kang is still expected to make an appearance Avengers 5Although we can’t see the character playing an equally large role in the story. We were told that Marvel/Disney cut ties with Majors almost immediately after news of his guilty plea broke, which would clearly indicate that they were waiting for the verdict before making their decision. However, some insiders believe that the studio would never move forward with Majors as Kang, regardless of the outcome of the trial.

The contracts make no mention of a new actor taking on the role of Kang, but do note that the film “could potentially feature multiple antagonists.”

Deadline recently reported some intriguing plot details.

“Sources close to the project say that more than 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles, including everyone from Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu and Karen Gillan. Unlike the first four films, which featured a core cast of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Hemsworth and Ruffalo, many of the characters in this film would be equals, making it more of an ensemble film rather than a handful of characters leading the team.”
