Money traced to jeweler Sowcarpet, officers say

CHENNAI: According to the police, in a recent development in the case of seizure of Rs 4 cash, the money has been traced to a jeweler in Sowcarpet.

On April 6 this year, cash worth Rs 3.99 crore was seized from three persons travelling in the Nellai Express at Tambaram railway station.

Police said today that the money from the jeweler in Sowcarpet had gone to the suspects before they were caught red-handed as they boarded the Nellai Express, Thanthi TV reported.

Three months ago, acting on a tip-off about cash being transported in the double-tier AC coach of the Chennai-Tirunelveli Nellai Superfast Express, the Election Commission’s flying squad along with Tambaram police rushed to Tambaram railway station and arrested the trio — S Sathish and S Naveen of Agaram in Chennai and S Perumal of Srivaikundam of Thoothukudi district. They were transporting cash worth Rs 4 crores in travel bags and trolleys.

Since the seizure came less than two weeks before the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu, it triggered a political storm, especially after it emerged that the arrested persons were allegedly linked to Nainar Nagendran, the BJP’s Tirunelveli candidate and vice-president of the party’s state unit.

Nainar Nagendran appeared before the CB-CID for questioning last Tuesday.
