New Delhi: England batting stalwart Joe Root continued his brilliant performances at the willow as he scored his 32nd Test century during the fourth day of the second Test between England and West Indies at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Sunday.

Building on his overnight score of 37 on the third day, Root remained vigilant about the performance of his Yorkshire batting partner Harry Brook from the non-striker’s seat as the latter scored his fifth Test hundred in his 23rd innings. Root and Brook revived England’s innings after they had been reduced to 140 for three in the second session on Saturday, the pair stitching together 189-run fourth wicket before Brook departed on 109.

Root continued the mantle from here, even though England lost the wickets of skipper Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith in the space of two overs. He played a delightful cut through the covers of a Kevin Sinclair shorter and wide delivery to reach 90.

A sumptuous square drive against an Alzari Joseph fuller-length ball was sent to the fence as the 33-year-old Root completed his 32nd Test ton. He removed his helmet, but not before pumping his fist in the air to applause from the crowd at Trent Bridge. Root was later dismissed on 122 after guiding England’s total past 400.

Here are three major records the Yorkshireman broke with his pulsating knock.

#3 Moved up to 8th place in the list of most test runs

Before the Test, Joe Root’s Test tally stood at 11,804 runs in 141 Tests, which puts him at 10th place in the overall list of highest run-scorers in Test cricket. After his first-innings 14 and then the magnificent ton, Root surpassed Mahela Jayawardene (11,814) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (11,867) to move to eighth place. The England No.4 has now amassed 11,940 runs in 142 Tests at 49.96.

#2 Retained joint 8th position for most Test centuries

Joe Root hit his 32nd Test century in Nottingham on Sunday, moving the 33-year-old into eighth place for Test centuries. He joined contemporaries Steve Smith and Kane Williamson’s tally of 32 Test centuries. Former Australia captain Steve Waugh also has 32 Test centuries to his name in his illustrious career. Root is one century away from equalling former Test captain Alastair Cook’s tally of 33 Test centuries, which would make him the joint-highest holder for England.

#1 Recorded jointly the most hundreds at a single location in England

Root completed his 19th Test ton on home soil. It was his fifth three-figure mark at Trent Bridge, giving him the most centuries at a single venue. He has equalled his tally of five centuries at Lord’s in London. The former England captain has hit three centuries at Edgbaston in Birmingham, while he has scored two centuries at Headlingley in Leeds and The Oval in London. He has hit just one century each at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff and Old Trafford in Manchester.
