Ashton was the one who had the throw in the opening leg and after Sherrock had wasted a couple of darts for an early break, ‘The Lancashire Rose’ punished with a 100 checkout to gain a scrappy hold. In the second leg Sherrock was again the heavier scorer but more missed darts at double again prevented her from capitalising, with Ashton taking a two-way lead.

Ashton’s early reliability on the outer ring continued in the next leg as he went three from three on doubles to move further clear. Finally, in leg 4, with her 10th dart on double in the match, Sherrock got going. Unruffled, Ashton began the next leg with five perfect darts, but with doubles trouble going the former world champion’s way, the Lancashire Rose missed 8 darts to bring Sherrock back to within one at 3-2 down and with a brilliant 129 in leg 6, it was suddenly level again.

Both players saw chances come and go in leg 7 before Ashton held the throw on double 2 to regain the lead. With more missed doubles drama in leg 8, Sherrock missed eight darts to force a deciding game. Ashton missed six for the game though and with both women on double 1, Sherrock finally took it to send the game the distance. Ashton had the darts and was the first to have another chance but missed tops for a 115. Sherrock made no mistake to secure the 5-4 victory.
