Since the pandemic, small towns and villages have become more popular than ever for people relocating.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that certain factors have consistently drawn the masses away from the hustle and bustle of city life and led to a more serene lifestyle in smaller locations. Some of these can be found right here in the First State, adding a few spots in Delaware to a list of the most charming small towns in the country..

Delaware Cities Top Most Charming Small Towns in the US

High 5 Casino, a social online casino, has developed the Small Town/City Relocation Index. This index is based on 22 key metrics and analyses data from 161 charming small towns and villages. It then ranks the cities from most to least charming.

Locations were taken from similar online rankings. The metric categories used for the score are ‘essentials’, ‘lifestyle’, ‘housing’ and ‘community’, with each individually rated on a 100-point scale and contributing to a total score of 100.

  • The score for ‘essentials’ has a weight of 37.5 and consists of cost of living, safety and the labor market.
  • The ‘lifestyle’ score has a weight of 30 and consists of entertainment venues, access to nature, amenities and climate
  • The score for ‘housing’ has a weight of 17.5 and consists of the affordability of housing and the demand for housing.
  • The ‘community’ score has a weight of 15 and consists of population density/age and access to health care and education.

Delaware has four cities on the High 5 Casino list, including:

  • New Castle, at No. 7, with a moving index score of 48.51 out of 100
  • Wilmington, at No. 77, with a moving index score of 41.09
  • Lewes, at No. 144, with a relocation index score of 34.77
  • Rehoboth Beach, at No. 161, with a Displacement Index score of 26.78

New Castle, the only city in Delaware to make the top 10, is surrounded by the following cities:

  • Homer, Alaska, at No. 1, with a rating of 59.8
  • Petoskey, Michigan, at No. 2, with a score of 59.7
  • Oxford, Mississippi, at No. 3, with a score of 52.7
  • Madison, Georgia, at No. 4, with a score of 52
  • Marietta, Ohio, at No. 5, with a score of 51.8
  • Abilene, Kansas, at No. 6, with a score of 50.2
  • Hood River, Oregon, at No. 8, with a score of 48
  • Scottsbluff, Nebraska, at No. 9, with a score of 47.4
  • Columbus, Mississippi, at No. 10, with a score of 47.2
