Hideki Kamiya would really like it if Capcom would let him make Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3

Game industry veteran Hideki Kamiya has revealed that he still wants to make sequels to the PS2 classics Okami and Viewtiful Joe.

These days, Kamiya is probably best known as the creator of Bayonetta , though he’s gone on to create a wide range of titles over the years. Devil May Cry is one thing to remember, of course, but there are of course two other beloved titles he’s created: Viewtiful Joe and Okami. While the former did get a sequel, the latter’s Zelda-style RPG never did, and it seems that’s something that’s eating away at Kamiya a bit, because in the second part of his interview with Ikumi Nakamura (who previously worked on Bayonetta himself), he spoke about his desire to make an Okami 2 . “The story ended halfway through, so I feel bad leaving it like this,” Kamiya said.

“I think creators have a duty to make sequels that fans want to see. As high and mighty as I sound, it’s been a while since I left Okami. But I still feel like I didn’t do my duty. So Capcom, please, let’s do it together.” Even Nakamura herself said “please” because Okami was another title she worked on with Kamiya – it was even her first credited game role. I’m no Kamiya or Nakamura, but I’d love to see an Okami 2 too, Capcom!

In addition to Okami 2, Kamiya also discussed a hypothetical Viewtiful Joe 3. While Okami recently appeared in a Capcom survey asking fans if they wanted a sequel, Viewtiful Joe did not appear in the survey. “That’s only because eight people have played Viewtiful Joe,” Kamiya joked. “That game also ended halfway through, so I have to finish it. The survey Capcom did last time didn’t have Viewtiful Joe as an option, so I sent a response saying, ‘I’m Hideki Kamiya, let me make the sequel to Viewtiful Joe.'”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, his comment didn’t make it into the survey results. “The director himself is asking to remake the game, but they don’t even want to talk about it. What the hell, Capcom?” Kamiya asked. “Where did my comment go? They’re posting comments from other players like ‘Resident Evil was my first game I bought for my PlayStation’ or ‘I’ve always enjoyed playing Mega Man since I was a kid.’ These comments are important, but it would have been nice if they had mentioned me too. Please listen to me as the director. I’m a human being too. I’m a gamer too. I wish they would treat me the same way they treat gamers.”

You can’t really tell tone from text, so I can assure you that he and Nakamura were laughing together during this discussion, so Kamiya probably isn’t too upset about it. Capcom should let him make an Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3 though.
