The New York Mets found themselves on the right side of a 1-0 victory on Saturday. Now the Mets have a chance to at least split a series with the Miami Marlins this afternoon in Florida.

Saturday’s game featured strong pitching from both teams. Luis Severino the Mets stepped it up a notch. Meanwhile, the Marlins let another struggling starting pitcher deliver an ace-like performance against the Mets. Can New York’s hitters break that streak today?

Game Notes

Kodai Senga struggled in his most recent rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. He lasted just three innings, allowing eight hits and five runs. Senga surrendered three hits and struck out just one, while allowing a home run. He threw 79 pitches.

Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed that Senga is scheduled to make his season debut on Friday against the Braves, assuming he continues to perform well.

Yesterday the Mets announced that they have signed a number of draft picks, the most notable of which was their second round pick: LHP Jonathan SantucciRHP Ryan LambertRHP Brendan GirtonINF Nick RoselliRHP Ethan LanthierRHP RJ GordonBY Jacoby Langand RHP Frank Elissalt.

With a win this afternoon, the Mets would move four games above .500, which would set a season record.

Three things to watch out for

  1. Unlucky Mets. If you’ve followed the Mets the last two games, you’ve seen the Mets hit more than a handful of screamers that ended up as outs. John Harper noted after the game that the Mets hit a total of 23 pitches with an exit velocity of 95 mph or more between Friday and Saturday. Eventually, the hard balls should come down as hits.
  2. The Marlins are eliminated. The Mets’ relievers threw the strikeouts when they needed them to keep the Marlins off the board: six strikeouts in three innings. Dedniel Nuñez allowed two hits, but struck out the side to keep the Marlins off the board. In the first two games of this series, the Mets’ bullpen has thrown six innings, allowed one run and struck out 11 batters.
  3. To beat with runners in scoring position. Getting hits with runners in scoring position will likely determine Sunday’s game. Both teams went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position on Saturday. Each team also stranded 10 runners.
