Joe Biden Officially Withdraws From 2024 Presidential Race: Live Updates

Protesters outside White House call on Biden to ‘pass the torch’

President Joe Biden has announced that he is withdrawing from the 2024 election.

“While it was my intention to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country that I step down and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my president for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a statement shared on X.

“I will speak to the nation in more detail about my decision later this week,” he continued.

The president is currently self-isolating at his Delaware beach house after contracting COVID-19.

His announcement Sunday afternoon comes after 37 Democratic and independent lawmakers publicly called for the president to pass the torch to another candidate. Several influential Democrats, including Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, have reportedly privately urged Biden to withdraw.

Calls from within his own party for Biden to withdraw followed his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris held a phone call with 300 major donors on Friday night, leaving many “frustrated” and feeling like the meeting was “poorly managed,” NBC News reports.

GOP lawmakers react to Biden’s resignation, call on him to leave the White House

President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he will not seek re-election in 2024. Within minutes, GOP lawmakers posted their reactions on social media.

Many lawmakers are also calling for Biden to leave the White House.

“Joe Biden has finally realized what the rest of the American people, and even his own party, already knew: He is not only the wrong leader for America, but he is utterly incapable of doing the job of president of the United States,” said Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee on X.

“If Joe is too weak to remain in the race for president, he should immediately resign as our commander in chief,” she continued.

Senator Josh Hawley made a similar statement: “Then resign. If you can’t run a simple political campaign, you can’t be president.”

“If he were to give up both the presidency and his candidacy, he could more credibly argue that he is doing so because of his health and age,” Utah Sen. Mike Lee wrote on X. “But resigning one and not the other feels like cheating.”

GOP pollster reveals findings on Biden’s prospects

Sarah Longwell, a Republican Party strategist and founder of Republican Voters Against Trump, said she has conducted several focus groups with undecided voters since President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate last month.

Longwell said many undecided voters simply want a younger candidate, but their preferences for Biden’s replacement “run all over the map.”

She also noted that there is one group of voters who are most dangerous for Democrats.

“The most alarming groups for Democrats are the groups we did with Clinton/Biden voters — regular Dem voters who are still undecided,” Longwell wrote on X. “Those groups also wanted Biden to step aside, and several were curious about third parties or talked about keeping them at the top of the ticket.”

This comes as Biden faces mounting pressure from 37 Democratic and independent lawmakers who have publicly called on him to resign. He is also privately under pressure, according to multiple media reports, from influential Democrats including Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi.
