Head-to-head race statistics between teammates

Head-to-head race statistics between teammates

The first rule of Formula 1 is simple: always beat your teammate. And in F1 2024, that will be no different for everyone on the grid.

You could argue that Formula 1 is the most selfish team sport in the world, with drivers working in the interests of their team but ultimately pursuing their own interests. And with the only real barometer of individual performance on the other side of the garage, head-to-head race records are a crucial way in which drivers are measured against each other, alongside the points they score at the end of the season. Let’s take a look.

Formula 1 2024 head-to-head race record: Red Bull

Max Verstappen 12-1 Sergio Perez
Sprint: Max Verstappen 3-0 Sergio Perez

Given that Max Verstappen won 19 of the 22 races last season, if Sergio Perez had beaten him in this category he would almost certainly have been on the top step of the podium.

He did that twice in the first four races of 2023, but Verstappen finished first in all the other races, resulting in a head-to-head record of 20-2. Perez will want to focus on that in 2024.

F1 2024 head-to-head race record: Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton 5-8 George Russell*
Sprint: Lewis Hamilton 1-2 George Russell

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell share the narrowest qualifying record of any driver in 2023, with their lap record ending last time out at 11-11. On Sunday, it was Hamilton who had the upper hand with a 15-6 record. If he hadn’t been disqualified in second place in Austin, it would have been 16-6.

Hamilton wants to show at Ferrari that he is still Mercedes’ best driver, while Russell wants to prove that he deserves the title of leader of the new Silver Arrows team.

*Russell crashed on lap 57 of the Australian Grand Prix but finished 17th, so his result stands.

Formula 1 2024 head-to-head race record: Ferrari

Carlos Sainz 5-6 Charles Leclerc*
Sprint: Carlos Sainz 1-2 Charles Leclerc

Oliver Bearman 0-1 Charles Leclerc

While Charles Leclerc often had the upper hand in qualifying over Carlos Sainz last season, it was often a different story in races. Leclerc had a 15-7 qualifying record in 2023, but in races he was only 11-9 ahead (with Qatar and Austin ruled out after a Sainz DNS and Leclerc DSQ respectively).

This Ferrari duo is generally evenly matched. Leclerc leads the drivers’ championship winners by 2-1. Last season he finished just six points ahead of Sainz.

Sainz was replaced by Ferrari reserve Oliver Bearman for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after falling ill.

*Neither driver completed the Canadian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 2024 head-to-head race record: McLaren

Lando Norris 9-4Oscar Piastri
Sprint: Lando Norris 1-2 Oscar Piastri

After McLaren made a remarkable recovery mid-season with their massive upgrade package, the company became a force to be reckoned with midway through 2023.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were not the only cause of this with their riding skills. Last season Norris had a score of 17-5 compared to his debuting teammate. Still, a victory in the sprint in Qatar for the Australian will have been a big boost for him now that this battle is getting fiercer.

F1 2024 head-to-head race record: Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso 8-5 Lance Stroll
Sprint: Fernando Alonso 1-2 Lance Stroll

Fernando Alonso beat Lance Stroll 19-3 in qualifying last season. In terms of racing performance, it was much the same: he scored much more than his teammate and ended the season with a 17-4 lead. However, Stroll missed the Singapore Grand Prix after a crash in qualifying.

Stroll admitted he needs to close the gap to his team-mate in 2024, but with Alonso being a two-time world champion and widely regarded as one of the best drivers to ever race in the sport, that would be no easy task for the Canadian.

Formula 1 2024 head-to-head race record: Alpine

Esteban Ocon 8-5 Pierre Gasly
Sprint: Esteban Ocon 2-1 Pierre Gasly

While Pierre Gasly held a 14-8 lead in qualifying last season and finished top of the world championship, it was in fact Esteban Ocon who crossed the line first more often in 2023, with a positive 10-9 record against his team-mate (three double retirements made up the deficit).

One of the most exciting battles within the team on the grid and both drivers have something to prove. More exciting battles are expected in 2024.

Formula 1 2024 head-to-head race record: Williams

Alex Albon 9-2 Logan Sargeant*
Sprint: Alex Albon 1-2 Logan Sargeant

With Alex Albon now firmly established as Williams’ team leader, underlined by his 22-0 qualifying wins last season, Logan Sargeant has been working hard over the 2023 winter break to flex his muscles and challenge for the Formula 1 grid this season.

Albon scored the lion’s share of points for Williams last year, setting an 18-3 race record (with two retirements at Suzuka) and will be hoping to repeat that feat in 2024.

*Sargeant did not start the Australian Grand Prix and neither driver finished the Canadian Grand Prix.

F1 2024 head-to-head race record: RB

Daniel Ricciardo 4-8* Yuki Tsunoda
Sprint: Daniel Ricciardo 2-1 Yuki Tsunoda

Yuki Tsunoda had to contend with three teammates in races last season, and only had a negative result in four races with Liam Lawson. Lawson finished first in three of the four races they raced together.

Overall, Tsunoda recorded a 13-8 victory in head-to-head matches last season, but he has struggled with Daniel Ricciardo, who is with the newly renamed RB this season.

*Neither driver finished the Chinese Grand Prix.

F1 2024 head-to-head race record: Kick Sauber

Valtteri Bottas 8-5 Zhou Guanyu
Sprint: Valtteri Bottas 1-2 Zhou Guanyu

Valtteri Bottas had a comfortable lead in qualifying over Zhou Guanyu last season with a score of 15-6, but their race form has been much poorer, with Bottas winning 12-9 in 2023.

Zhou and Bottas will both enter the final year of their current contracts with their teams this season, so they will be looking to differentiate themselves from their team-mate in the 2024 Formula 1 campaign.

F1 2024 head-to-head race record: Haas

Kevin Magnussen 1-11 Nico Hulkenberg*
Sprint: Kevin Magnussen 2-1 Nico Hulkenberg

Nico Hulkenberg won the qualifying matches against Kevin Magnussen last season with 15-7. The Dane came back somewhat at the end of the season to a narrow margin of 13-9.

Another exciting battle is expected between the experienced Haas duo, with both drivers looking ahead to the future beyond the end of 2024.

*Neither driver finished the Monaco Grand Prix.
