8-year-old girl, woman shot for resisting robbery in Karachi

KARACHI – A woman and a young girl were shot and injured after the former resisted a robbery in Karachi’s Mauripur area on Sunday. Police said the suspects snatched a phone and bag from the family and fled the scene. The victim’s family had come to Hawkes Bay for a picnic and their vehicle broke down on the way, police said.

While they were waiting for the car to be repaired, the assailants came and snatched their belongings, and injured them after resisting. The law enforcement officials said that the injured 35-year-old woman and the eight-year-old girl were taken to Civil Hospital Karachi for medical attention. Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Asad Raza has formed a committee to investigate the incident and has sought a statement from the Deputy Superintendent of Mauripur Police about the incident.

The DIG also warned the station house officer (SHO) Mauripur of repercussions if suspects involved in the Hawksbay robbery incident were not caught within a week. “Action will be taken against the SHO if the suspects are not arrested,” he said.

It is to be noted that at least 82 people have been killed in the robbery incidents in Karachi this year. While according to the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), in just six months this year — from January to June — 10,323 mobile phones were stolen in Karachi, including 1,433 last month.
