Report: Barrow Raiders 8-6 Sheffield Eagles

Barrow Raiders produced one of their best performances of the season as they defeated high-flying Sheffield Eagles 8-6 in Round 16 of the Betfred Championship.

After three straight defeats it took a performance of real determination and tenacity to beat the Eagles, with the only two tries of the game coming in the first 40 metres.

It wasn’t until midway through the first half that the Raiders scored their first points, with Luke Broadbent making a sensational break down the right and finding Luke Cresswell on the inside to score.

Ryan Shaw’s missed conversion reduced the lead to just four points. A bit of luck saw Sheffield take the lead just before half-time when Brad Walker’s shot was blocked and deflected well for Joel Farrell, who picked up the loose ball and ran clear to score.

A penalty in front of the posts just before half-time gave the Raiders the opportunity to tee up the ball, with Shaw levelling the score at 6-6.

After a real arm wrestling match in the second half, the decisive points came twelve minutes before the end, again via Shaw’s boot.

There were still chances for both teams as the game progressed, Sheffield really challenged the Raiders defence but they held on and held on for two crucial points.

The Raiders are back on the road next Sunday, with a trip to Doncaster in the offing. Tickets for that game can be purchased here.
