Logan’s Mysterious Past

The mystery of origins has suited some characters in the world of comics. A good example of this is the jokera villain whose canonical beginning was a mystery and when a scriptwriter dared to change it, he was regarded with suspicion and disdain. The next most famous case would probably be that of the long-lived mutant with adamantium claws…

If there is one thing that is characteristic of our protagonist, it is that, besides being the best at what he does, he does not remember his past. That would change in a way with Wolverine – Originthe work with which Andy Kubert and Paul Jenkins They wanted to shed light on the mutant’s childhood and adolescence. Fortunately, most of his story remained unknown…

Until he arrived Dynasty of MThis event would provide a glorious stage for The House of Ideas by the hand of Brian Michael Bendis and would have many consequences for the continuity of the Universe 616one of which would be the restoration of Logan’s memory. There is no doubt that this change in his memory would cause, among other things, the need to settle scores with many people…

Old Enemies and Dynasty of M

When Way first took over the character, his monthly series wasn’t at its best, which is notable given the current situation, as we’re talking about a time when Hugh Jackman had expanded the character’s popularity far beyond the comic book world.

In this first attempt, the scriptwriter signs the last three numbers of his second part, which open this part. They are not particularly remarkable and here Way is not recognizable if we compare it with some of his great works such as the miniseries of Punisher vs. Bullseye, Nighthawk O Bullseye: Greatest Hits. However, his work is satisfying and beloved enough Joe Quesada so that he’ll think of him when it’s time to give the character a new focus: facing the consequences of House of M.

The weapons Way will wield to succeed in this mission are based on some fundamental concepts introduced into the character’s mythology by retro continuity. We have new memories of the program Weapon-Xa dead woman in Japan pregnant with Logan and the sword Muramasa accompanying him on a journey of revenge and reckoning, in which in this first part we will meet the Payment SamuraiHe Winter soldier, nuclear bombHe Captain America or the mutants of Cyclops and Emma Vorst.

Steve Dillon never fails

In the graphic part, the truth is that the volume is not particularly remarkable, except when a giant like Steve Dillon enters the fray. And it does so precisely to take charge of the first five issues of the new series Wolverine: Origin devoted exclusively to telling the character’s past. The cartoonist is a natural fit for Way when he’s at his most mischievous (they’ve worked together on the screenwriter’s best works), and here they both give a lecture on how to make a fun, entertaining, and masterfully told comic strip.

Ultimately, the highlight of the book is Way’s ability to explore the implications of Wolverine’s memory recovery following the events of House of M. His focus on tying up loose ends adds a new dimension to his mythology with new flashbacks, such as the emotional backstory of a lost woman.

On the other hand, the first few issues of the volume are less impressive, can feel a bit disconnected and lack the dynamism that characterizes the rest of the volume. Also, the artwork, with the exception of Dillon, could be better. Still, the volume is a solid entry into Way’s time with the character, necessary to enjoy what’s to come…

The deluxe book published by Panini Comics in hardcover contains 512 pages in color with a page size of 17 x 26 cm and includes the translation of the American edition of the numbers Wolverine 187-189, 33-40, Wolverine Origins 1-5, Saber-toothed tiger 1-4 and material of I ♥ Marvel: My Mutant HeartThe book also includes an introduction by Peter Monnik and an extensive extras section at the end with alternative covers and commentary by Way. The suggested retail price is 49,95 € and went on sale in June 2024.
