For many schools, summer vacation ends in just over a month. If the kids are getting restless at home, a day trip might add some fun to the summer and create some family memories.

You can head to Presque Isle, the Erie Zoo, or Waldameer, but if you want to explore a little further from Erie, there are also several attractions and institutions just a few miles away in the area.

Drake Well Museum and Park

Drake Well is operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and is the heart of Pennsylvania’s Oil Region National Heritage Area. It is located about 46 miles from Erie, or a 70-minute drive.

The museum has preserved the site of Drake’s Well for more than 80 years and tells the story of the origins of the petroleum industry.

Visitors can enjoy a 240-hectare site with 12,000 square meters of exhibitions and much more.

Drake Well offers biking trails, fly fishing routes, hiking trails and much more.
