Medal hunt as Scots impress at English Athletics Championships

Medal hunt as Scots impress at English Athletics Championships

Monday, July 22, 2024

Thanks to coach Ryan McAllister, here are the trio of Scottish medal winners in Birmingham – Scott Connal, Amy Kennedy and Murray Fotheringham (and also Erin Campbell)

Results of the English Athletics Championships

Scottish athletes travelled south to Birmingham to take part in the English Athletics Championships divided into three age categories.

And when the cohort returned home – the vast majority of whom were north of the border – there was a considerable haul of medals to feast on.

It was great to see how diverse the medal winners were, including in the sprint hurdles, steeplechase, jumps and throws.

We won no fewer than seven gold medals at the Senior, U23 and U20 championships, including the Para events.

Javelin thrower Dawn Russell led the U23 level with gold thanks to a personal best of 49.49 meters.

At U20 level there were places on the highest podium for Scott Hopper (javelin), Reiss Marshall (3000m) and Angela McAuslan-Kelly (hammer).

Angela’s victory should earn her a place in the British and Northern Ireland team for the World Junior Championships.

High jumper Matthew Tait won the silver medal in the U20 event, while Henry Clarkson (pictured below with coach Linda Nicholson) won silver in the senior triple jump (photos via social media)

Sammi Koningshoorn And Kirsty Soutar delivered three gold medals in Para events in the wheelchair racing and sitting throwing categories.

Rebecca GrieveHe won the silver medal in the 400 meters for athletes under 20 with a time of 54.31. This puts him in ninth place on our all-time list for athletes under 20.

Congratulations to all the Scottish athletes who made the trip south and to their coaches and support teams. Hopefully they will all benefit from the experience of deeper competition – with our own Scottish National Champions taking place in Grangemouth next month.
