Giants’ Brooms Flatten Lowriders’ Tires in 9-1 Series Final

Fresno, CA – The Fresno Lowriders (8-16, 46-43) were routed 9-1 by the San Jose Giants (18-6, 55-34) on Sunday night at Chukchansi Park. Fresno suffered a three-game losing streak and lost its sixth straight game to San Jose. The Lowriders are 1-10 in their last 11 games and 9-15 overall this year against the Giants, who now hold a 10-game lead in the second half of the North Division. Fresno has scored five runs in its last six games, dating back to July 12 at Lake Elsinore. Four of those five runs came on Sunday. The Lowriders have scored just one run in three games during the shortened home stretch.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an infield single by Jack Payton. Andy Perez and the Lowriders drove in their lone run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to center. Luis Mendez was the recipient of the run. San Jose would score eight unanswered runs, including a five-run seventh inning. The Giants offense finished with 17 hits, six of which went to extra bases. Every San Jose starter reached base at least once. Jean Carlos Sio reached base five times, including a two-run homer and a double. Drew Cavanaugh hit his first longball of the season, also a two-run clout. Elian Rayo and Payton combined for five hits at the bottom of the San Jose order.

Fresno starter Jack Mahoney (4-6) took the loss after four tough innings. Mahoney scattered seven hits and a career-high three walks, allowing two runs. Sam Weatherly struck out four batters in two innings. Austin Becker was fantastic, throwing one and two-thirds of scoreless innings of baseball. Becker struck out two batters in his outing. Kannon Handy also recorded a clean out.

San Jose righty Cale Lansville allowed an unearned run in three innings. He surrendered to a quartet of relievers, who slammed the door on the Lowriders. Mikell Manzano (1-0) got the win after two big frames. Fresno will have an off day tomorrow before returning to action Tuesday night in Stockton.
