Rumor: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III to Join Game Pass When Season 5 Launches

Perhaps this is Microsoft’s way of bringing first-party games to Game Pass.

We have a new rumor about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.

As shared by CharlieIntel, extas1tv claims that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will be added to Game Pass on July 24, the same day that Season 5 of the game begins.

If the rumor is true, it could point to what Microsoft is planning to do when it comes to scheduling their now massive library of first party games for Game Pass. While they’re fresh off of acquiring Activision Blizzard King, they also have games from Bethesda and games from studios they’ve founded or acquired separately to schedule.

While they no longer plan to offer it everywhere, the rotating library of games remains a major reason to buy Game Pass. The expectation, of course, is that games made by Microsoft’s own studios will be a permanent part of that rotating library. If Microsoft has to negotiate contracts with the companies that own third-party games, they don’t have that problem with the games they own.

But Microsoft needs to balance this with the ability of these games to make money off of Game Pass. This isn’t so much about devaluing Game Pass, but rather the fact that many of Microsoft’s games, including Dutyare sold outside their platforms.

If Microsoft made it so that all of their own games were Day One Game Pass when they launched, it could result in less money flowing to them overall. If this decision making was a slide from going all-in on Game Pass to abandoning it altogether, Microsoft is still somewhere in the middle.

There’s certainly been a lot of speculation about how successful Game Pass is, with Microsoft planning to launch a new tier that doesn’t have Day One games. But we don’t know what numbers Microsoft is crunching. That’s partly because Microsoft no longer wants to keep its gaming division open to the public, and now wants to hide those numbers in larger numbers when it produces its financial reports.

We don’t know if this standard can or should be applied to all of their games, but maybe it would be good for Duty games in particular. Since Duty is an annualized franchise, most gamers will not be playing last year’s game when the newer game comes out. In fact, the older game will definitely see a drop in numbers weeks in advance.

Well, we’ll have to wait and see how Microsoft behaves in the coming years, but if this rumor is true, don’t be surprised if they confirm it within a few days.
