Japan-US to hold 2+2 talks in Tokyo

Tokyo, July 22 Japan and the United States will hold a foreign ministerial meeting, Japan-US Security Advisory Committee (Japan-US 2+2) talks and the Japan-US Ministerial Meeting on Extended Deterrence during US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s two-day visit to Tokyo starting on July 28, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Blinken and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, along with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara, will also align their positions on security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region during the “2+2” meeting.

The four ministers will take up the achievements of security and defense cooperation during Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to Washington in April this year, and will also discuss future cooperation to realize a “free and open” Indo-Pacific region.

According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the talks will focus on strengthening the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-US alliance, and on the direction of security and defense cooperation in the region.

“The four ministers will hold a Japan-US ministerial meeting on extended deterrence and discuss bilateral cooperation to continue strengthening the US extended deterrence, which is enhanced by Japan’s defense capabilities, taking into account the progress of discussions aimed at the Japan-US dialogue on extended deterrence,” the report said.
