House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7: Aemond’s Motives

As we delve deeper into House of the Dragon season 2, what does Aemond really want? This is up for debate!

After all, you could argue that on some level, it’s pretty clear that the character wants to be king. He seems to recognize the value that comes with being there, and he hasn’t hesitated to make a handful of moves. Just think of what we saw when he removed Alicent from the Small Council, or worked to potentially bring Otto back on board.

Now, all that being said, this isn’t a character who’s focused on just this one thing. Instead, he just wants to be seen as someone who can be a hero, whether that means ruling or not. Here’s what Ewan Mitchell had to say about it to Variety:

Aemond has a lot of motivations. One of them is that he wants to be the war hero and be seen as this almost unkillable force, very much like the Rogue Prince, the younger Daemon Targaryen. Especially since Aemond wields the greatest unique power in Vhagar, that power comes with a great responsibility. He has to be seen as someone who can master that power. It ultimately means that in his mind, he has to be the person who wins the war for the Greens. He is willing to do whatever evil is necessary. That’s the thing about Aemond, he doesn’t necessarily consider other people’s perspectives in the situation. He has his own unique perspective. He sees the world through a very black and white filter. You’re either with him or against him, and if you stand in his way, he will take you down.

For now, Aegon can be seen as against him, especially since there is a chance that Aegon himself could try to take him down while he recovers. With that in mind, don’t be shocked if there is a war simmering beneath the surface for a while ahead.
