From tacos to burgers and steaks to sushi, Topeka has restaurants that locals love.

But there may be a few that you haven’t noticed during your daily commute.

Don’t worry, we’ve listed a few that you might want to consider the next time you’re looking for lunch or dinner in the capital.

Most of these restaurants are a mainstay in the Topeka community, having been open for more than 10 years.

Below are five “not new” restaurants that we believe are among the most underrated restaurants and food trucks in Topeka.

Taco Villa, 5300 SW 21st St., Suite A

Taco Villa has been in the Topeka community for over 10 years. Known for their queso, burritos sanchos and more, this restaurant offers something for all taco lovers.

Blake Geisley, manager at Taco Villa, said the restaurant has been busy since he started working there in 2007. He said one of their best-selling menu items is the “Thing” meal. The “Thing” has meat and cheese, with sauces melted over a fried flour crust. It costs $4.49.

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 20:00. Sunday closed.

Yuki Restaurant from Japan, 5632 SW 29th St.

Owned by Jason Jeon, Yuki Restaurant of Japan is a great local choice if you’re ready to consider a hibachi dinner. Yuki offers sushi rolls, toro, oysters, and more, along with a personalized hibachi dinner.

There are also weekly specials offered, which you can find on the Yuki Restaurant of Japan Facebook page.

Jeon said Yuki has been successful in the Topeka community because of the great quality of the food and the atmosphere.

“It’s more fun and there are many more regular customers,” says Jeon.

Opening hours: Monday to Thursday from 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM, Friday from 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM, Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM and Sunday from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

North Star Steakhouse, 1100 NW 25th St.

North Star Steakhouse has been serving the Topeka community for over 20 years with its signature steak options including porterhouse, T-bone, KC strip and more. Customers can also find specialties such as a chicken fried steak meal or a bone-in pork chop.

Steaks at North Star cost between $22.99 and $64.99, depending on your choice.

Opening hours: 17:00-21:30 Tuesday to Thursday, 17:00-22:30 Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Bobo’s Drive-In, 2300 SW 10th Ave.

When it comes to the question of where to get a good burger in Topeka, you can’t deny that Bobo’s is in the conversation. The company is celebrating 76 years in the business and customers keep coming back for more.

Highlights include a steakburger for $3.79, a cheeseburger for $4.29, a jumbo cheeseburger for $8.99, hot dogs and corn dogs for $2.99, and more.

“The one thing that makes Bobo’s special is that the things we have are homemade. The components we make fresh every day,” owner Tricia Marsh told The Capital-Journal. “We hand-cut and hand-top our onion rings, and we take real pride in that. Our chili on our coney dogs is one of the traditions of Bobo’s. It’s a recipe that’s been carried on.

“Our Spanish burger is a classic. People from the ’50s who still eat at Bobo’s say it still tastes the same.”

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 20:00. Sunday closed.

Tacos El Guitarron, 1234 SE California Ave. and 109 SE 29th St.

While not an actual restaurant, Tacos El Guitarron is a food truck that has become well-known in the community. This authentic Mexican food includes a variety of taco options such as asada, pollo, and pastor, along with tortillas, quesadillas, burritos, and more.

Prices at Tacos El Guitarron range from $2 to $12, depending on your order. The company recently opened a second truck location at 109 SE 29th St.
