After announcing the series’ 30th anniversary celebrations via an update, Tekken 8 has now welcomed the legendary character who will star in the third paid DLC, Heihachi Mishima himself. Born into a powerful clan and with a tough and ambitious persona, he has led the Mishima Zaibatsu for most of the series, and is legendary for throwing his own son, Kazuya Mishima, off a cliff.

However, Kazuya survived and returned years later to seek revenge, which is one of the central themes of the Tekken series. Heihachi, who has also been an enemy of his grandson, Jin Kazama, survived multiple betrayals, corporate wars, and supernatural conflicts, though the seventh installment of the series bids him farewell for good, or so it seemed, as those who pay for the DLC will see him return in Tekken 8.

He’s alive.

Bandai Namco announced at EVO 2024 that Heihachi Mishima will be the third additional fighter in Tekken 8 following the arrivals of Eddy Gordo and Lidia Sobieska, with his arrival scheduled for this fall. Franchise boss Katsuhiro Harada explained to IGN that “Tekken 7 really focused on the storyline between Heihachi and his son, Kazuya, and so we really wanted to show that kind of final conclusion, and it seemed to die at that point.”

But “after that happened, Tekken 8 came out, we put a lot of effort into the story and the fans seemed to really engage with it. And while that was happening, we felt like the players were missing it too. We were missing it too, of course. So we decided later on that’s what we were going to do,” he explains, justifying his return.

The best Tekken ever?

In our analysis of Tekken 8, we already predicted that the saga was back in fashion 30 years after its start, managing to “renew itself and adapt to the new times with a new proposal of spectacular audiovisual and technical quality**. The physics of the fights could not be more surprising, with scenarios that reflect the effects of the fights and more realistic fighters than ever before”. The game is available on PS5, Xbox Series and PC.
