Canada advances to CONCACAF U-20 with 2-1 win over El Salvador – Winnipeg Free Press

IRAPUATO, Mexico – A stoppage-time goal from forward Mataeo Bunbury gave Canada its second group-stage victory at the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Soccer Championship in Mexico on Friday.

Bunbury scored a goal in the 93rd minute after entering the game in the 74th minute to give Canada a 2-1 victory over El Salvador, extending Canada’s record at the international tournament to 2-0-1.

Another forward, Santiago Lopez, scored Canada’s first goal in the 21st minute of the match. The Canadian team held on to this lead until Francis Castillo equalized for El Salvador in the 77th minute.

The win keeps Canada undefeated in Group B, with a 2-2 draw against Honduras on July 20 followed by a 1-0 victory over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

Canada held a narrow 16-14 lead over El Salvador and had possession for 56 percent of the game, and had eight corner kicks against El Salvador, while they had only five themselves.
